Citrusy Immune Honey Syrup

We’ve made it through the holidays and now we are in a new season; the sickness season! I am a firm believer that part of the cold and flu season is a direct result of the holiday season when we eat a bit more sugar, stay up a bit later, and drain ourselves (and our bank accounts) a bit more than necessary. All that said, prevention is still key. There are plenty of immune building supplements out there but REAL food is by far the most effective and easiest for the body to process.

One of my favorite winter recipes is this Citrusy Immune Syrup. It is simple to make and you probably have most of the ingredients in your kitchen right as we speak. If you don’t however, or if you don’t enjoy the taste of any of the listed ingredients, you can easily skip them and still have a wonderful outcome.

Ingredients and Supplies:

  • 24 ounce mason jar

  • 1-2 sliced oranges

  • 1-2 sliced lemons

  • 1-2 inches sliced ginger

  • 10 cloves garlic, sliced

  • 1-2 Tbs turmeric powder or 1/2 inch turmeric root

  • 1/2 Tbs black pepper (more if you like, avoid if you have a sore throat)

  • 16 ounces honey, organic

Add all ingredients to the jar. Cover with honey. Let sit for 4-24 hours. Will stay good on the counter for 7-10 days. This medicine can be used as a cough syrup or medicine, eaten straight from the spoon. Or, add 2 Tbsp to warm water and drink as a tea. You can also eat the garlic cloves(my favorite!)

*Water must be drinkable warm. Adding honey to hot water is toxic.
