Clean Green Juice

Spring is on it’s way and I don’t know about you but I am SO EXCITED about all things Spring brings! I’ve always been a big fan of fresh green juice but Ayurveda taught me that fresh juice isn’t necessarily beneficial to the body during all seasons. Spring, however, finds our homes, our gut, our excretory systems and our minds needing a nice cleanse. This super simple juice is excellent for clearing the body of unwanted ama (toxic waste), is super refreshing, and is most easily digested in the Spring Time. This recipe is easy on the liver, helping to cool it and prepare it for the heat of summer.

This juice is best taken without any other food. Fruit, particularly in the form of juice, digests more quickly than other foods and when eaten with other foods, can create gas and bloating. Imagine the juice becoming caught up in the digestion process, already complete in it’s digestion process, and becoming fermented within the heat and movement of the other foods still digesting. If you are susceptible to gas or bloating, consider eating all fruits at least an hour away from other foods. A healthy gut micro-biome can alleviate this issue in some cases but one of the causes of imbalance in the gut, is gas and bloating. This juice is ideal in the place of a meal or as a snack.

Ingredients and Supplies:

  • (1) Apple coarsly chopped (Red or green work well. Green is a bit more cleansing, red is more sweet.)

  • (1) Lemon (juiced)

  • (2 leaves) Kale or Baby Spinach (pull leaves off the stem, discard stem)

  • (1 inch) Fresh ginger root

  • Water (to consistency you like, ideally thinner than a smoothie and more juice like)

  • Blender

  • Strainer

Directions:

Add ingredients to blender, start on low speed and slowly increase blender speed to high. Once blended to the consistency you like, pour through strainer.

Enjoy!

Notes:

I like to save my pulp and add it to my veggies when I make veggie broth or add it to a muffin recipe.

Makes 2 servings. Reserve half in the fridge in a sealed mason jar for up to 24 hours or share with a friend!
